After
the First World War thousands of radio enthusiasts built rustic radio
receivers to listen to radio signals. They spent long hours listening to
mysterious sounds which were the signs of radio telegraphy. For amateurs
it was interesting and intriguing to be able to build a radio receiver
and even more, to build a radio transmitter capable of sending messages
using the radio waves. In 1914 all radio activity disappeared but years
alter the radio fans multiplied, they communicated among themselves,
compared their equipment and formed clubs in an effort to exchange
knowledge about radio.
In Puerto Rico the new fad started to grow and interest developed from
the few papers and magazines received from the United States. During
1915 Joaquín Agusty (later 4JE) one of the pioneers of the time, built
and installed in his apartment on San José Street in Old San Juan the
first amateur radio station known in Puerto Rico. With time the group of
radio enthusiasts increased and in 1921 the first radio club was
founded. It was known as the “Porto Rico Radio Club”.
That first club disappeared when Joaquín Agusty dedicated all his time
and knowledge in developing a new project, the installation of the first
commercial radio station in Puerto Rico. The station aired its first
program on December 3, 1922. WKAQ was the second broadcast station in
Latin America and the fifth in the World. KDKA in Pennsylvania, WJZ in
New Jersey, WEAF in New York. PWX in Havana, Cuba that went on the air 4
months before WKAQ became active.
From
those days to the present many clubs have been founded. Some are active
and others have disappeared. To date there are over 3500 amateur
operators in the Island and interest continues to grow although the fast
changes in technology have reduce its pace..

On our
19th Anniversary (1988-2006), with this page we want to honor the
efforts of our pioneers in Amateur Radio. Ninety two years later we
count with a healthy community of hams in Puerto Rico.
